A retrofit at the SunRise tower in Alberta, Canada, incorporates colorful solar facades and photovoltaic murals to harness renewable energy, helping reduce carbon emissions.
The building-integrated solar panels and murals were designed to resemble tiles or panels, with the energy-absorbing technology embedded beneath their surface, providing an aesthetic yet functional solution.
The project, featuring the world's largest building-integrated photovoltaic mural, is a collaboration between Mitrex, indigenous artist Lance Cardinal, and other partners to exceed a 50 percent carbon reduction target by upgrading the original energy system to 267 kW.
The SunRise tower's solar facades and murals pay tribute to First Nations and Chinese cultures, adding artistic value to the building while generating around 180,000 kilowatt-hours of energy per year, equivalent to powering 23 homes annually.
