Company claims 1,000 percent price hike drove it from VMware to open source rival

  • Cloud operator Beeks Group has migrated most of its virtual machines (VMs) from VMware to OpenNebula, an open source cloud and edge computing platform.
  • Beeks Group, headquartered in the UK, sells virtual private servers and bare metal servers to financial service providers.
  • The company decided to migrate due to a significant price hike in VMware software licenses, resulting in a bill 10 times higher than before.
  • While Beeks still has some VMware VMs, the majority of its machines now run on OpenNebula.
