The U.S. Senate passed a budget reconciliation bill allocating an additional $10 billion to NASA's Artemis program, including funds for Space Launch System rockets and a moon-orbiting station called Gateway.
Critics such as SpaceX's Elon Musk and entrepreneur Jared Isaacman opposed the use of SLS due to its high costs and lack of reusability.
The $10 billion funding, if signed by Trump, will support more SLS rockets for Artemis missions and completion of the Gateway station, contradicting a previous proposal to phase out SLS and Orion spacecraft after Artemis III.
The bill also includes funding for a Mars Telecommunications Orbiter, continued operation of the International Space Station, and $325 million to SpaceX for a deorbit spacecraft development.
