Researchers from Monash University's Exertion Games Lab in Melbourne believe that extended reality (XR) could help people overcome their fear of water.
The XR experience involves using a virtual reality headset while lying in a floatation tank, taking participants on a visual and auditory journey through water-based worlds.
In a small study, participants reported experiencing less anxiety about water when using the XR system.
Further studies with a larger number of participants are encouraged to expand on these results and explore extended reality as a means to manage aquaphobia and other phobias.
