Senate Democrats have proposed new legislation that would charge fees on data centers and cryptocurrency mining operations that surpass federal emissions standards.
The bill, known as the 'Clean Cloud Act,' aims to lower the carbon footprint of data facilities and crypto mining operations.
The proposed legislation would have the Environmental Protection Agency develop emissions standards for large data centers, with penalties starting at $20 per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions that exceed the limits.
Data centers could account for up to 12% of the total US power demand by 2028, and the power demands from crypto miners and data centers are outpacing the growth of carbon-free electricity.
