Nicholas Truglia, who initially received 18 months in prison for his involvement in a $22 million cryptocurrency theft scheme, had his sentence extended to 12 years for failing to repay the victim $20.4 million as promised.
Despite already serving his original sentence, Truglia was taken into custody immediately after the resentencing.
Truglia's lawyer argued that the new sentence was an 'extraordinary abuse of discretion' and pledged to appeal.
Truglia was part of a group of hackers who targeted Michael Terpin, draining his cryptocurrency accounts. The judge criticized Truglia's lavish lifestyle and assets, including crypto, art, and jewellery.
