The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) is testing underwater drones for reef conservation in a collaborative project called Eonios.
CMMI and underwater drone manufacturer Arkeocean are running the experiment using underwater autonomous vehicles (AUVs) to monitor artificial coral reefs.
Arkeocean's swarm AUVs, referred to as micro-drones, patrol the reefs collecting visual and acoustic data, while remaining noninvasive to the marine life.
The success of the project could pave the way for a sustainable future in maritime ecosystems by combining drone technology with environmental restoration efforts.
