Czech Republic’s Justice Minister Pavel Blažek has resigned over a bitcoin scandal involving a suspicious donation and its controversial sale by the ministry.
The Ministry of Justice received a donation of bitcoins, later sold for over $45 million, from an individual convicted of criminal offenses, sparking accusations of money laundering.
Blažek denied misconduct but resigned to protect the coalition government. The scandal has raised concerns about the origin of the bitcoins and their donation motive.
The main opposition party ANO is expected to gain momentum with Blažek’s resignation ahead of the October parliamentary elections, creating uncertainty over the new Justice Minister's appointment.
