Dark Skies is a large-scale sound installation at the Horst Arts & Music Festival created by Leopold Banchini and Giona Bierens de Haan in collaboration with DVS1, suspended above the crowd to transform the space into a collective dance floor.
The installation consists of 116 top speakers and 58 subwoofers forming a ceiling of sound, distributed evenly to minimize focus on individual performers and enhance the collective experience.
Constructed with recycled materials and volunteer support, the system spans over 1,000 sqm and was assembled during a workshop with non-professional volunteers, emphasizing collaborative construction processes and material reuse.
Designed for collective listening and movement, the Dark Skies sound installation prioritizes acoustic immersion and spatial equity, enveloping the entire space in a multi-directional sound field for a dense collective auditory experience.
