Detroit is planting a grove of giant sequoia trees in its downtown area through the efforts of Archangel Ancient Tree Archive.
The project aims to protect the genetics of these iconic trees and provide them a new habitat in Detroit that can thrive amidst climate change.
The giant sequoias, known for their resilience, will offer benefits such as shade, air pollution reduction, and carbon sequestration for decades to come.
The trees, planted in Detroit's Poletown East neighborhood, could grow to 15 feet in height in ten years, with the potential to reach over 300 feet tall and live over 3,000 years.
