Tom has implemented a DIY navigation system on his catamaran, the SeaHorse, using a Raspberry Pi as the back end.
The Raspberry Pi is housed in a waterproof box with a silicone gasket to protect it from salt water, and the CPU is under-clocked to reduce heat generation and power consumption.
Tom uses obsolescent phones and a repurposed laptop screen as display surfaces for his navdesk, which provides access to various data including weather forecasts, maps, GPS, depth, and speed over ground.
The system integrates a software-defined radio and a reprogrammed buoy transmitter to enhance functionalities, with OpenCPN serving as the primary navigational platform.
