Donkey Kong Bananza was requested by Nintendo executive Yoshiaka Koizumi to the Super Mario Odyssey team to work on a 3D Donkey Kong game.
The Odyssey team collaborated with Donkey Kong creator Shigeru Miyamoto to incorporate unique actions and features of Donkey Kong into the game.
The core destructive mechanics of Donkey Kong Bananza were inspired by a programmer's experimentation with voxel technology and discussions about Donkey Kong's strength and abilities.
