Don't panic – those mystery drones over New Jersey might not be so mysterious after all

  • There have been numerous sightings over the east coast of the US of "mystery drones" that some experts say might have a very simple – and undramatic – explanation.
  • The drones that people are seeing are usually huge enterprise-grade drones used by businesses for surveillance, package delivery, and sometimes feature film operations.
  • Some of the sightings of large drones over New Jersey are from amateur drone pilots taking advantage of the attention and then being added to lists of drone sightings.
  • There could have been a larger drone test conducted either by the local or federal government or a company that wanted to see how well a delivery fleet operated at night.
  • The FAA has authorized some drone night flights, though the drones still have to remain at elevations under 400 feet.
  • Unless they're military drones, foreign enemies' spy drones are not flying thousands or even hundreds of miles to reach US shores.
  • The US government has moved too slowly to address the "drone invasion" (they've finally agreed to send in special drone-detecting technology), but the FAA has been too lax about drone registration and tracking.
  • Anything that takes off in public airspace should instantly become a tracked dot on local flight tracking systems.
  • Most drones people think they're seeing are not. They're still planes, helicopters, and satellites.
  • Until the US government responds effectively to consumer concerns, the drone hysteria will grow, and people will start shooting at these drones.
