DoT Eases Switching Between Prepaid and Postpaid with OTP-Based Process

  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has simplified the process for switching between prepaid and postpaid mobile connections.
  • The new directive, issued on June 10, 2025, reduces the mandatory cooling-off period for reconversion to 30 days for the first switch between prepaid and postpaid.
  • For subsequent conversions using OTP, the original 90-day lock-in period will still apply.
  • Subscribers need to be informed of the applicable lock-in period each time a conversion is initiated to ensure transparency and prevent misuse.
  • Reconversion during the lock-in period can also be done through physical verification at authorized outlets or Points of Sale (PoS) by completing the existing KYC process.
  • The simplified process aims to enhance user convenience while maintaining security and compliance standards.
