DoT Proposes New Cybersecurity Rules To Curb Mobile Number Fraud

  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has proposed amendments to the cybersecurity framework to reduce fraud related to the misuse of mobile numbers.
  • DoT suggested the creation of a mobile number validation (MNV) platform for authorized stakeholders like telecom operators, banks, financial institutions, and ecommerce companies to verify users' mobile numbers by paying a prescribed fee.

  • In a move to address rising digital fraud incidents in India, the DoT disconnected over 1 Cr mobile connections last year, while telecom companies like Airtel have introduced AI-led fraud detection solutions to protect users from cyber threats.
