The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has proposed amendments to the cybersecurity framework to reduce fraud related to the misuse of mobile numbers.
DoT suggested the creation of a mobile number validation (MNV) platform for authorized stakeholders like telecom operators, banks, financial institutions, and ecommerce companies to verify users' mobile numbers by paying a prescribed fee.
In a bid to tackle digital fraud, the DoT proposed fees of INR 1.5 per request for entities acting on government directions and INR 3 per request otherwise, for mobile number verification through the MNV platform.
In a move to address rising digital fraud incidents in India, the DoT disconnected over 1 Cr mobile connections last year, while telecom companies like Airtel have introduced AI-led fraud detection solutions to protect users from cyber threats.
