The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) rules out further delicensing of the 6 GHz spectrum band beyond the already allocated 500 MHz for WiFi and low-power wireless equipment.
DoT believes the current unlicensed spectrum in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands is sufficient to meet India’s WiFi needs, with a marginal increase in transmit power considered for outdoor WiFi devices using the 6 GHz band.
Global tech companies, including Amazon, Google, Meta, Qualcomm, and Netflix, urged for an additional 160 MHz in the 6 GHz band to support high-speed applications enabled by WiFi 6E and WiFi 7.
Reliance Jio supports the DoT's decision to cap the spectrum at 500 MHz and calls for increased outdoor WiFi power limits, while rivals like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea seek further consultations before a final decision.
