Dreamsettler, the spiritual sequel to Hypnospace Outlaw, has been cancelled after over three years since its announcement.
Lead developer Jay Tholen shared a video explaining the cancellation, stating it was a mutual decision between him and the publisher.
Tholen mentioned bad timing due to launching a Patreon to support the project earlier this year.
There are plans to release existing parts of the game, including the soundtrack by composer The Chowder Man, in some form.
The development approach for Dreamsettler involved having a budget, planned game structure, and a specific schedule to follow.
Tholen admitted challenges in working on the game, mentioning difficulties in following a traditional design document.
Tholen expressed self-awareness about being hard to work with, acknowledging the potential for a different team to have successfully completed the game.
In the intervening years, Tholen worked on another game, Slayer X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengeance of the Slayer, receiving mixed reviews.
Co-founder John Walker had previously reviewed Hypnospace Outlaw, the predecessor to Dreamsettler, and found it compelling.
