A team of researchers, led by Toshihiro Somekawa, has developed a drone-powered laser system for monitoring plastic pollution in water systems. The system combines hyperspectral Raman imaging and drone-enabled LiDAR technology. The low-cost laser system, mounted on a drone, can detect plastic pollution from a distance of nearly 20 feet. The technology has potential applications in both marine and land environments for monitoring plastic debris and other purposes.
