Reports of strange unidentified aircraft in northern New Jersey have surged in the past several weeks, which include reports of drones, but no one knows much more. Eyewitnesses and videos suggest that some of these drones are rotorcraft and others are fixed-wing, with some seeming to fly solo and erratically, while others operate in an orderly formation. The FBI issued a statement with the New Jersey State Police and the state's Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness seeking information related to the drone sightings. However, it is important to note that some of these sightings may be cases of mistaken identity due to poor smartphone optics.
Many eyewitnesses have turned to local news organizations and to Enigma Labs, a New York City-based startup that crowdsources sightings and recordings of unidentified aerial phenomena. Enigma Labs has received dozens of related reports (including some with video) from users in the region in the last three weeks, with drones accounting for 16% of its U.S. submissions in that timeframe.
Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced it was probing the matter, after a temporary FAA drone flight ban was issued over the Bedminster, New Jersey golf club owned by President-elect Donald Trump. Elect officials in Morris County, where many of the reports appear to have originated, also wrote to relevant federal agencies.
The reports suggest some drones are as large as a car and have been seen maneuvering over major waterways, municipal reservoirs and even sensitive military facilities like the U.S. Army's Picatinny Arsenal. Other sightings have been reported in surrounding counties and as far south as Philadelphia.
The inexplicable phenomenon occurs as new reports of drone activity around Langley Air Force Base and four U.S.-used military bases in the U.K. are also reported. Enigma Labs expects to discover patterns and figure out what is happening by crowdsourcing data and investigating together.
Many of the photos and reported videos are unable to provide certainty given the varied quality of reporting, and some even suggest that the drones may be cases of mistaken identity.
Despite the varied quality of the witness reports, something strange in the air over northern New Jersey cannot be ignored, especially given the response from federal and state authorities probing the matter. However, what this strange phenomenon is remains to be seen.
