Duolingo's CEO, Luis von Ahn, has outlined three criteria for deciding what subjects to add on the app.
The first criteria is that the subjects must have a large demand, with at least hundreds of millions of people interested in learning the topic.
The second criteria is that the subjects must benefit the world, and the company will not add topics like Pokémon cards that do not meet this standard.
The third criteria is that the team within the company must be motivated and excited about adding a specific subject, as seen with the development of the chess course recently.
