Scientists held a science fair on Capitol Hill to showcase canceled research programs due to funding cuts in response to President Trump's budget reductions for science.
The event, titled 'The Things We’ll Never Know: A Science Fair of Canceled Grants,' featured 21 science exhibitions that include research on coastal erosion, helping disabled children, and pandemic preparation.
Funding for the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health was reduced by nearly 50%, leading to the cancellation of grants related to diversity, equity, environmental justice, and misinformation/disinformation.
The cuts to research funding are causing concern as federal research spending in relation to GDP is at its lowest level since the 1950s, potentially impacting the US's ability to stay competitive in critical areas like quantum computing and biotechnology.
