Grumman Aerospace made a breakthrough in forming metal parts using electromagnetic forming techniques several decades ago.
The technique involved using electromagnetic forces to squeeze metal tubes with gear-like fittings, resulting in parts that are stronger, lighter, and more fatigue resistant.
The process of EMF torque tube production includes placing a tube inside a coil, installing the end fitting, and generating a strong electromagnetic field to drive the tube inwards, forming a strong joint with the end fitting.
The technology was licensed to Boeing and proved to be highly successful, with the video on the development of the Grumman EMF Torque Tube showcasing the innovative technique.
