Over 80 signatories representing around 100 organizations have signed an open letter to the president of the European Commission, urging the EU to increase support for local alternatives to big tech products, services, and infrastructure.
If Europe decides to go self-sufficient on the tech front and create its own “Euro Stack,” more competition with American tech would arise, leading to better products for consumers.
The current lack of alternatives to big tech products and services, such as search engines, map software apps, AI models, operating systems, and social media platforms, push consumers towards American companies, and the EU seeking homegrown alternatives would provide more choices worldwide.
With the strict data laws in the EU, individuals would have a choice between selling their data or not, instead of deciding who to sell it to, if the EU supports local tech alternatives.
