Duncan Wardle spent 30 years at Disney as the head of innovation and creativity, and has written a new book called the The Imagination Emporium: Creative Recipes for Innovation.
He argues in an interview with PYMNTS that the biggest barrier to innovation is not a lack of time or resources, but rather our own past experience and expertise.
Wardle says that the history of innovation is full of companies that have said “yes, and” while those that say “no, because” have failed.
He offers tips, tricks and exercises in his book to help companies shift to a “yes, and” mentality.
Wardle discusses how creativity thrives within constraints, as exemplified by Disney’s Greenhouse - a physical space where negative phrases like “no, because” are banned.
He argues that great ideas often arise when the brain shifts from a conscious to subconscious state, which is why laughter and playfulness are also important tools for unlocking creativity.
Wardle believes that success in innovation means creating a culture where creativity is a habit, not just a one-off event.
