Former NSA analyst, Jon DiMaggio, witnessed a cyber gang known as Scattered Spider attempting to infiltrate a large US retail organization through a fake help-desk call.
Scattered Spider is linked to various cyber crimes like SIM swapping, ransomware attacks, and fake IT calls, and they have targeted major companies such as MGM and Caesars.
The group is adept at social engineering, possessing detailed information about employees to sound authentic during their attempts. They are skilled at evading detection and are difficult to flag as suspicious.
Some organizations like Co-op have been proactive in protecting against such attacks by taking down their own systems before cybercriminals like Scattered Spider can encrypt their files and infiltrate their networks.
