Extending the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) from Kota Bharu to Sungai Golok would bridge the gap in the eastern corridor of the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link (Pan-Asian Railway Network).
The extension could create a land bridge between Port Klang, Kuantan Port, and Kunming via southern Thailand, enhancing Malaysia-Thailand rail connectivity.
Improved connectivity can support Kelantan's development goals, attract private investment, and align with Malaysia's National Logistics Policy 2030.
Challenges include costs exceeding RM2 billion, land acquisition in flood-prone areas, bridging the Golok River, and environmental concerns, but successful execution could transform Malaysia's East Coast into a trade and logistics corridor for ASEAN and Indo-Pacific region.
