Facebook's parent company, Meta, is considering launching paid-for subscriptions to its platform in the UK.
The company already offers a subscription service in the EU, providing an ad-free experience for users.
The move comes after a human rights campaigner filed a lawsuit against Facebook for using her personal data for direct marketing purposes, which resulted in an agreement to stop targeting adverts at her.
Meta believes that the cost of building and maintaining Facebook and Instagram justifies exploring the option of offering UK users a subscription in order to reduce reliance on personalized advertising.
