Fern, a startup, has raised $9 million in funding to automate the creation and maintenance of software development kits (SDKs) and their documentation.
The Series A funding round was led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Y Combinator, bringing Fern's total funding to $13 million.
Fern aims to simplify SDK maintenance by automating the upkeep of SDKs, crucial for working with public APIs.
SDKs help developers build software applications by providing tools, libraries, and guidelines to interact with a platform or programming environment.
Fern uses AI to analyze APIs and generate/update SDKs in multiple languages, such as TypeScript, Python, Java, etc.
Their main offering, Fern SDK Generator, automates the publishing and maintenance of SDKs to platforms like GitHub and npm.
In addition to SDKs, Fern also automates the creation of documentation websites called Fern Docs, providing API references and interactive playgrounds for developers.
Fern's upcoming AI assistant, Ask AI, will answer technical questions about the documentation it creates.
The company's approach aims to ensure a smooth developer experience with updated SDKs, well-documented methods, and interactive features.
Fern's tools are already used by over 150 enterprises, and its future plans include Model Context Protocol servers for AI-driven integration.
