The Finance Ministry's Department of Expenditure called for stringent measures to avoid duplication and unnecessary expenses in government schemes, as evidenced by a recent workshop chaired by the Cabinet Secretary.
A total of 54 Central Sector Schemes (CSSs) and 260 Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSs) are set for reappraisal, covering various sectors from social services to infrastructure and scientific research with current approvals expiring by March 31, 2026.
The Expenditure Committee will evaluate these schemes based on financial aspects like budget outlay and policy aspects focusing on effectiveness and delivery. The appraisal will consider realistic outlays and factors like fiscal space for new initiatives and debt reduction targets.
The policy aspect for appraisal will emphasize the effectiveness of scheme delivery, incorporating evaluation findings, expected results, and allowing for flexibility in component selection by the States.
