The Finance Ministry's Department of Expenditure called for stringent measures to continue government schemes beyond March 31, 2026, avoiding duplication and emphasizing the reduction of wasteful expenditure.
A workshop chaired by the Cabinet Secretary initiated the appraisal process for Central Sector Schemes (CSs) and Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSSs) to assess their effectiveness and reduce administrative costs.
A total of 54 CSSs and 260 CSs are proposed for re-appraisal, covering sectors like health, education, agriculture, infrastructure, and environment, to ensure realistic budget outlays and effective resource allocation.
The appraisal criteria include financial aspects like setting realistic outlays and policy aspects focusing on delivery effectiveness, State participation, and merging smaller schemes for enhanced outcomes.
