In a mass firing at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), many teams responsible for reviewing artificial intelligence (AI) and food safety were decimated.
Hundreds of employees, including scientists who monitor pathogen tests and evaluate the safety of medical devices, were laid off.
The firings also eliminated positions evaluating brain-implant technology in Elon Musk's Neuralink devices.
The FDA relied on fees from the drug, medical device, and tobacco industries to fund these positions, which are now at risk.
