Fitbit has settled with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) over a defect in its Ionic smartwatch that caused burns for some wearers.
The settlement involves Fitbit paying a $12.25 million penalty for the issue, which was identified in 2018 and resulted in a recall of the smartwatch in 2022.
A firmware update released in 2020 failed to fully resolve the problem, leading to the CPSC's involvement.
As part of the agreement, Fitbit will provide annual safety reports to the commission and implement internal controls to ensure compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Act.
