Folded Echoes is a collaboration between textile designer Nathalie Van der Massen and ceramic artist Karen Verlinden, creating 17 mixed-media pieces that transform paper folds into sculptural forms.
The collection showcases craft tradition by using basic material manipulations such as folding paper to create sculptural volumes, with Van der Massen's room dividers made from linen and paper yarns, and Verlinden's ceramic pieces capturing the essence of folded paper in clay.
The collaboration explores the contrast between hard and soft materials, heavy and light structures, enhancing the sculptural qualities of the work. Verlinden's wall sculptures utilize changing light conditions to make shadows an active part of the artwork.
Apart from its aesthetic value, the collaboration sets a precedent for interdisciplinary making that could influence future craft education and practice by combining individual artistic voices with collective exploration.
