Food companies’ edible waste given to charities thanks to AI tool trial

  • An artificial intelligence tool is being trialled by companies in the UK, like Nestlé, to reduce edible food waste and redistribute it to charities.
  • The AI tool has already shown an 87% reduction in edible food waste at Nestlé's factory and could save up to 700 tonnes of surplus food, equivalent to 1.5 million meals.
  • The tool, developed by Zest, identifies edible but unsellable food like broken products or items with short expiry dates, and aims to cut waste, reduce emissions, and lower costs.
  • Funding from the government agency Innovate UK's BridgeAI scheme supports the project, which could have a significant impact on reducing the 4.6 million tonnes of edible food wasted in the UK each year.
