An artificial intelligence tool is being trialled by companies in the UK, like Nestlé, to reduce edible food waste and redistribute it to charities.
The AI tool has already shown an 87% reduction in edible food waste at Nestlé's factory and could save up to 700 tonnes of surplus food, equivalent to 1.5 million meals.
The tool, developed by Zest, identifies edible but unsellable food like broken products or items with short expiry dates, and aims to cut waste, reduce emissions, and lower costs.
Funding from the government agency Innovate UK's BridgeAI scheme supports the project, which could have a significant impact on reducing the 4.6 million tonnes of edible food wasted in the UK each year.
