The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a preliminary investigation into Ford's BlueCruise driver assistance system.
The investigation comes after two fatal crashes involving the system, both of which occurred at night.
Ford's BlueCruise system is designed for restricted access, divided lane highways and requires driver attention through an infrared gaze-tracking camera.
Unlike Tesla's Autopilot, BlueCruise has a tightly controlled operational design domain (ODD).
