Former BioWare lead writer, David Gaider, argues that story can be just as engaging as combat in video games.
Gaider used the example of the Ocean House Hotel level in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines as a compelling non-combat scenario that captivated players.
He advocated against the inclusion of unnecessary combat encounters in games and emphasized the importance of keeping players interested through storytelling and non-combat gameplay elements.
Despite facing challenges in implementing combat-free scenarios in games like Dragon Age: Inquisition, Gaider believes that focusing on story and politics can keep players engaged in RPGs.
