"Friction is at the heart of creativity" was the consensus when a panel hosted by Dezeen and The New Standard met in New York to discuss the importance of productive collaboration".
Designers were cautioned not to become trapped in elitist echo chambers and encouraged to seek out partners with differing perspectives.
Sharing vulnerability and honest dialogue are also essential, as is making space for differing opinions.
Innovative ideas, panelists agreed, were not generated in isolation.
Moderated by Dezeen's US editor Ben Dreith, the panel included representatives from Universal Design Studio, Map Project Office, Made Thought, New Balance, and the Brooklyn Museum.
Participants also highlighted that successful collaborations required the ability to embrace messiness and to focus on the systems, people, and interdisciplinary approaches that underpin successful design and communications work.
According to Kimberli Grant, Brooklyn Museum contemporary art curator, successful collaboration requires a company culture that actively listens to staff and valued partners.
Michaela Crompton, strategy director at Made Thought agreed, adding that "embracing informality doesn't always have to be a creative review, which sounds intimidating. It can be a kick-around for a chat, a conversation, sharing ideas, and listening to each other."
Design groups were also urged to reject control and take chances.
Chuck Mauro, global marketing director at New Balance said, "Risk is really everything. Letting go is a necessary part of collaboration."
