Gaming with expensive AR smart glasses is first-class fun

  • Xreal's new $499 One AR glasses serve as an external display for consoles like the Steam Deck when connected via USB-C cable. It creates a comfortable way to play games, allowing you to look directly ahead rather than hunching over. The glasses are also compact and friendly for travelers who want a big-screen experience while on the go.
  • The Xreal One features embedded OLED displays and side arms containing speakers tuned by Bose. It can create an image equivalent to a 171-inch screen in front of you and tracks your head movements, adjusting the screen's orientation as you move.
  • The One's screens are slightly boosted in terms of size and field of view from the previous version, and it features an interpupillary distance adjustment feature. However, it tops out at 1080p, and it has a small FOV, making parts of the picture appear blurrier than others.
  • The Xreal One's $499 price tag may make it an unnecessary expense for most gamers. The $299 Meta Quest 3S and the Quest 2 offer solid VR experiences at a much lower price, although it is more cumbersome to use a VR headset with a Steam Deck.
  • To use a VR headset with the Steam Deck, you would need an HDMI capture card and possibly a cable or two. You may also have to buy some accessories to make it work. There are options to connect the Quest to your Steam Deck, but it may get a bit messy with cables and dongles.
  • The Xreal One is a more convenient and simpler-to-use gadget that can display your games on a personal big screen. It is impressive for a small gadget, and the One features embedded OLED displays and side arms containing speakers tuned by Bose.
  • There are a few other issues that anyone who's considering buying the Xreal One should know about. While it can reach up to a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate, content looks extra fuzzy if you're looking at low-resolution text and graphics.
  • The way that the Xreal One's displays are merged to create a whole image is effective, although parts of the full picture appear blurrier than others. Additionally, using a VR headset with a Steam Deck is not a plug-and-play affair, and you may need to buy some accessories to make it work.
  • Lastly, another accessory that can help you play games more comfortably is the Mechanism Gaming Pillow. It is like a bean bag for your lap with an adjustable stand on its top, and it supports the weight of the Steam Deck at the viewing angle that's best for your neck.
