Gartner predicts AI agents will transform work, but disillusionment is growing
- Gartner's Hype Cycle for Generative AI indicates four projected trends in enterprise AI adoption through 2024.
- While Gartner predicts that gen AI will transform the workplace with fleets of AI workers, the research firm acknowledges AI agents as a concept is still in its early stage.
- Gartner VP Arun Chandrasekaran spoke specifically about multimodality and edge AI as trends, as more companies use smaller models and include images and video in their models.
- AI is still sliding into the trough of disillusionment, according to Gartner. VCs have provided a lot of funding for startups, but the amount of cash required for success appears to have been underestimated, as has the challenge of change management.
- AI is instrumental to enterprise leaders, however. This year, 75% of CEOs surveyed by Gartner said AI is the technological initiative most likely to impact their industry, up from just 21% in 2019.
- Marketing and gen AI are perfect for each other, Chandrasekaran said, using sentiment analysis and personalized content examples. However, there are concerns about data preparation and inferencing costs which are often greatly underestimated.
- Enterprises want the ability to query and retrieve from their own data sources. Enterprise search is an area where AI is going to have a significant impact.
- Chandrasekaran points to three business functions with high AI adoption: IT, security and marketing. AI can automate workflow, assist customer service, co-pilot software coding and offer insights.
- Gartner forecasts that AI will be responsible for 6.2 billion hours of worker productivity as early as 2021.
- Enterprise searches for specific leaders in charge of their AI strategies. Before gen AI, data scientists were the main industry driver, but 60% of CIOs are now tasked with leading strategies.
