General Motors and LG Energy Solution have introduced a new battery solution, the lithium manganese-rich (LMR) cells, that promises lower costs without compromising on range for electric vehicles.
Expected to be available in GM's electric trucks and large SUVs by 2028, the LMR cells offer high energy density equivalent to lithium iron phosphate batteries but at a lower cost.
This new prismatic EV battery cell design reduces production complexity by requiring fewer parts, thus streamlining production processes and lowering overall costs.
GM's VP of battery, propulsion, and sustainability, Kurt Kelty, anticipates achieving more than 400 miles of range in a single charge for trucks while reducing battery costs significantly.
