GM says new battery chemistry will enable 400-mile range EVs

  • General Motors partners with LG to develop safer, more energy-dense, and cost-effective lithium manganese-rich (LMR) batteries for electric trucks and SUVs.
  • GM aims to be the first automaker to utilize LMR batteries in EVs, targeting commercial production in the US by 2028, ahead of Ford who plans to adopt the technology by 2030.
  • LMR batteries use a higher proportion of manganese, a more affordable and plentiful material than cobalt, offering greater capacity and energy density.
  • The new LMR batteries, produced by Ultium Cells, are expected to offer up to 400 miles of range, be less complex to manufacture, and potentially lead to lower-cost EVs.
