Apple is transitioning from the traditional iOS and iPadOS version numbering to a year-based naming convention.
The shift was announced at WWDC25, where Apple revealed that the upcoming releases will be identified as iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 instead of iOS 19 and iPadOS 19.
The company's decision to unify version numbers across all platforms will also affect macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS, which will all adopt the same naming style for the current year.
This change comes as Apple introduces a unified 'Liquid Glass' design and marks a departure from the naming scheme that has been in place for iOS since its launch in 2007.
