Google has signed a deal with Commonwealth Fusion Systems to purchase 200 megawatts of clean fusion power from a project called ARC in Virginia.
The project aims to be the first grid-scale power plant using fusion technology, with a planned total capacity of 400 MW and scheduled to go online in the early 2030s.
Even though there are scientific challenges to overcome regarding fusion technology, Google sees this investment as a 'longer-term bet.' The company has been investing in CFS since 2021.
While fusion energy has been sought for decades as a carbon-free energy source, it has not yet delivered more power than is required to start the reaction. In contrast, other tech firms have turned to conventional nuclear energy for powering data centers.
