Chile's government-owned enterprise Desarrollo Pais partners with Google to create a joint venture called Humboldt Connect to deploy an undersea fiber optic cable connecting South America with Oceania.
The Humboldt Connect project, set for deployment in 2025-2026 with commercial operation in 2027, will span 14,800 kilometers linking Valparaíso, Chile, and Sydney, Australia.
Chile aims to be a regional hub connecting South America, Asia-Pacific, and Oceania through the Humboldt project, benefiting neighboring countries with more digital route options.
The joint venture between Desarrollo Pais and Google will hold a 50-50 percentage stake. While the total investment remains undisclosed, estimates value the project between $300 million to $550 million.
