Cake, an open-source AI infrastructure management startup that helps businesses compile their AI infrastructure, is emerging from stealth mode backed by Google’s AI-focused Gradient Ventures.
Cake integrates more than 100 components, including data source adapters, data ingestion, data labelling, databases and generative AI APIs, among other categories.
Cake has raised $13m since its inception, including a $10m seed round led by Gradient Ventures.
The curated and managed open-source AI platform is already working with customers such as AI bioscience startup Altis Labs and data intelligence insurtech Ping.
Cake creates an AI stack format suitable for business and aims to reduce engineering overheads.
Cake was founded in 2022 in New York by CEO Misha Herscu and CTO Skyler Thomas.
Cake is targeting businesses with complex data requirements beyond those that can be met by off-the-shelf products.
Cake is not built around a single open-source project but instead integrates a curated selection of open-source projects and makes them run smoothly.
Cake’s CTO Thomas, previously a distinguished engineer and director of strategy at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, says most of the AI tooling coming out of research labs is not ready for use by enterprises.
Cake plans to eventually introduce a hosted version of its AI platform.
