Google-owned navigation platform Waze will fall under stricter rules from the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) as it has surpassed 45 million average monthly users from July to December 2024.
The DSA requires 'gatekeeper' companies, including Waze, to comply with more stringent provisions, such as monitoring online content, creating a public archive of advertisements, and allowing users to opt out of profile-based recommendations.
The European Commission is expected to issue an update on Waze's Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) designation after verifying the figures in about two months.
Last year, TikTok withdrew a rewards program in the EU due to concerns about its potential addictive effect, marking the first resolution of a case under the DSA.
