The District Mineral Fund (DMF) corpus size in India has crossed ₹1 lakh crore, with over three lakh projects sanctioned in 645 districts across 23 states.
Odisha leads in utilizing the funds with 29%, followed by Chhattisgarh (14%) and Jharkhand (13%). The funds primarily target mining-affected areas and populations.
Criticism suggests lack of structured plans in DMFs, with focus on infrastructure over key sectors like livelihoods and human capital development. Poverty alleviation programs have been overlooked.
The government aims to enhance fund utilization through better convergence with Central schemes, focusing on sectors like drinking water, healthcare, education, and sanitation. The Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana (PMKKKY) and Aspirational Districts Programme are key initiatives in this regard.
