The government in Pakistan plans to introduce an Energy Vehicle Adoption Levy on fuel-powered vehicles to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles.
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) aims to discourage traditional fuel-powered vehicle use and shift towards electric mobility with this new levy.
Internal combustion engine vehicles below 1300cc will face a one per cent ad valorem charge on the invoice price, inclusive of duties and taxes.
Vehicles with engine capacities between 1300cc and 1800cc will be subject to a two per cent ad valorem charge, whether locally manufactured or imported.
For vehicles exceeding 1800cc, a three per cent ad valorem levy will be imposed on manufacturers and importers.
Commercial transport vehicles like buses and trucks powered by internal combustion engines will also be charged with a one per cent levy.
The Energy Vehicle Adoption Levy is part of the government's strategy to reduce emissions and promote electric vehicle usage in line with global trends.
If approved, this proposed levy will be incorporated into the 2025-26 fiscal policy framework in Pakistan.
