A British startup, HoloMem, is developing a ribbon-based cartridge system using holographic technology, offering over 50 years of data longevity.
The technology uses mass-produced, low-cost components like a standard $5 laser diode and polymer sheets, distinguishing it from previous high-cost holographic storage ventures.
The system utilizes an optical tape ribbon, enabling existing tape libraries to be upgraded with higher-capacity drive shelves, with each cartridge capable of storing up to 200 terabytes of data.
HoloMem's novel approach is designed to provide higher density, faster access times, and longer lifespan compared to traditional magnetic tape technology, with plans to explore multi-channel recording for increased storage capacity.
