How (and Why) to Take a 3-Week Vacation While Keeping Your Business Profitable

  • Entrepreneurs must take time to recover from periods of high stress to continue performing their best, said The World's Most Disciplined Man. Breaks allow a chance for people to recover and come back more motivated and prepared for work. Narrow focus and determine the two or three largest profit centres of the business before planning a vacation. Once the top profit centres have been identified, create a content plan, gaining any assistance from a team, for front loading in the coming weeks. Spend a week before vacation working on content and putting it into the right channels. Talk to team members to delegate responsibility and ensure that everyone knows how to handle all tasks normally taken on by an entrepreneur. Host a company-wide strategy session to go over what needs to be done every day of the week, who is responsible for issues, when it's okay to contact the entrepreneur and what sort of reporting the team needs to do while the entrepreneur is away. Upon returning, sit down and talk to the team about its experience and review any deviations from the plan.
  • The post recommends that entrepreneurs streamline their business into just a few channels to help the business maintain profitability. Entrepreneurs must spend time on vacation doing more than just sitting around or watching TV. Identifying the business' profit centres and creating a content plan for these channels ensures that your business will keep earning while you are away. Delegation and team training is key to making sure that everyone understands who is responsible for what tasks.
  • Host a company-wide strategy session regarding contingency and possible scenarios. Post-vacation, entrepreneurs must review how the business performed during their absence and identify tasks that a team member was better at than the entrepreneur was. This will enable the entrepreneur to permanently delegate a task and free up time to focus on more important tasks.
